EFT for Releasing Trauma That Keeps You from Achieving Your Goals

It's part of the human condition that we all have at least one painful event from the past which is preventing us from achieving at least one of our goals. (And yes, that includes Oprah, Goddess of Achievement and Success, who has both written and spoken about this.)

You might be wondering what I mean by that. To illustrate it, let me tell you the story of my client, Amy (name changed to protect privacy).

Amy came to me for help achieving her professional goals. In our first session, I asked her the following question:

If there was a reason why you wouldn't be able to achieve your professional goals, what would it be? With no hesitation, she replied, "Because I don't deserve that kind of success."

Once she said that, in order to release that limiting belief and everything tied to it, all I had to do was follow the thread. Here's what the beginning of that thread looked like:

I don't deserve that kind of success because I'm bad.

I believe I'm bad because my dad used to tell me that when I was little.

After she gave me this information, to continue following the thread, I needed her to give me specific examples of her father telling her this.

Why? Because these traumatic experiences had given rise to the limiting beliefs, "I don't deserve success," and "I'm bad," (as well as others), and unless you tap to release the root of a limiting belief, that belief will grow right back.

So we tapped out all of the traumatic memories until there was no longer any pain, fear, or stress associated with them. Then we tapped out the limiting beliefs that had sprung from them, and then she was free, free, free to achieve her professional goals.

One of these goals was to make $400,000 that year. When I ran into her a few months after completing our work together, she shared with me that she had not only achieved that goal (which had very recently seemed outlandish to her), she had exceeded it.

And that, my friend, is the power of tapping.

While achieving her goal of earning $400,000 was a dream come true, it was far from the only benefit of the healing we did in order to release the inner obstacles that were holding her back.

In addition to achieving this life-changing goal, she also received the following benefits:

  • Healing of emotional wounds caused by past traumas

  • Freedom from the fear that was triggered in circumstances which reminded her of past traumas

  • Much improved self-esteem, as beliefs like I don't deserve success, and I'm bad dropped away

  • Spontaneous forgiveness of her father as the wounds that resulted from his harsh treatment of her were healed

  • Freedom from the shame that had burdened her throughout her life as a result of her painful childhood experiences

Perhaps you're thinking that this doesn't apply to you. Maybe it doesn't, but I'm guessing it does.

Perhaps you think that you haven't experienced anything painful enough to qualify as "trauma," but I'm guessing you have.

Here's why: Most people think of trauma as being only dramatically upsetting and damaging experiences like abuse, serious accidents, violent crime, and the like. But the truth is, according to Webster's dictionary anyway, trauma is simply "an emotional upset."

My work with clients confirms this. Though many of them have told me that they've never experienced trauma, once we begin to unpack whatever issue they've come to me to heal, it quickly becomes clear that they are traumatized.

Even though the memory that has them crying in session with me is of an experience that they've described as trivial or "no big deal," it has traumatized them, and that trauma has given rise to limiting beliefs which are holding them back in virtually every area of their lives.

I've seen this in every client I've worked with over the years, and I've seen it in myself, too. So far as I can tell, it's simply part of how being human works.

To further illustrate how this works, and how you can use what I'm describing for your own healing, let's use the image above.

I created the image above (just the text part of it) using hypothetical examples drawn from my work with clients and students.

Let's go through the first one on the list:

In the image above, the corresponding obstacle is "Financial trauma from student loans." Here's how this could (and often does) prevent someone from achieving their financial goals, and what it might look once it was unpacked in an EFT session:

Even though the loans have already been paid off, the trauma they caused when they were still outstanding is still stuck in the person's body-mind, which causes the following:

  • Stress when they think about money, so that they then avoid thinking about money, which leads to poor financial decision

  • Feelings of unworthiness caused by being in debt and struggling to pay it off

  • Regret about having accepted student loans, leading to self-recrimination, which then leads to self-defeating behaviors

  • Limiting beliefs such as I'll always struggle financially, I'll never be financially comfortable, I don't deserve prosperity, etc.

In order to remove the inner obstacle of past financial trauma caused by student loans, the above painful emotions and limiting beliefs will need to be tapped out, as they are all part of it.

Once that has been done and there is no remaining pain or stress, and no remaining limiting beliefs, when the person thinks about the past financial trauma, and also when they think about the goal of making $200,000 that year, that tapping job will have been completed.

The short answer is: every kind of goal. Professional goals, financial goals, health goals, fitness goals, relationship goals, traveling goals, basket-weaving goals.

Whatever your goals are, chances are you've got at least one inner obstacle to achieving it which is rooted in past pain. Find the pain and the related limiting beliefs, and you will be amazed by how effortlessly and quickly you begin taking action toward achieving the goal.

You will be amazed by how related opportunities seem to drop out of the sky into your lap, and how doors that lead to the realization of your dreams fly open--doors which had previously always seemed locked, and not just locked, but barricaded, and not just barricaded, but with signs that said in big red letters:

I've facilitated this process many, many times, and I've been through it myself with my own goals and the past pain that has formed obstacles to achieving them. It never ceases to amaze me, and even though it may seem too good to be true, I can assure that it is not.

So whatever it is you would like to achieve in your life, I wholeheartedly encourage you to look for the past pain that's keeping you from doing it, and tap.it.out.

If you feel comfortable and motivated enough to do it on your own, go for it! There are tons of resources on my website (including this article) to help you get there.

If tapping on your own isn't your thing, or if you would simply like to have the support and guidance of an experienced professional who knows stuff inside and out, then work with a trained EFT practitioner.

Or, do what many of my clients do, which is tap on your own and with an EFT practitioner.

Whichever of these options you choose, know that I am cheering you on, and I am so excited about the healing and fulfillment that it will lead to.

When doing EFT tapping on your own, if you aren't able to completely heal the issue you're working on, so that when you think about it, it no longer causes any stress, emotional pain, anger, or fear, I recommend working with a professional EFT practitioner. If you decide that this is the best course of action for you, and you'd like to work with me, click here to schedule a session or free consultation click here.

Are you hurting about an event from your past and are not quite sure how to release it with EFT? Here's an easy to follow list of steps to guide you through the process:

1) Name the memory. For example: My husband cheated on me.

2) Give a number between 0 and 10 to the emotional intensity you experience when you feel into this memory.

As long as we're carrying the past around inside us (which is just what happens to us as human beings--it's not a choice, and it's not our fault), it will continue to affect our present day lives--the choices we make, how we see the world, and the extent to which we're able to realize our potential.

Though the weight of our emotional baggage can feel overwhelming at times, there is a fin...
